The sudden change in speed or an abrupt turn is what gives us the thrills, not just the speed. G is more closely associated with acceleration than speed. Part of the credit for that feeling goes to G-force.
#HIGHEST G FORCE SURVIVED SERIES#
The dizzying series of climbs and free-falls packs and crunches our stomachs with an incredible feeling that can only be experienced, not described. Think back to the last time you got on a roller-coaster ride. G-force can act on us in bizarre ways, doing physiologically peculiar or painful things to our bodies. Yet, G-force is not some rare or mysterious thing it is simply a unit for measuring any force, by comparing it to the Earth’s gravitational pull at sea level (quantified as 1 G). Such high-magnitude force is quite punishing and can lead to momentary blackouts (losing of consciousness), even in highly trained and experienced pilots or astronauts. The pilot, Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, was forced to eject from his own plane-a process that could have subjected his body to a crushing 20 G of pressure-and still managed to land safely on the ground.įor comparison, 20 G is more than 15 times the pressure we feel on a commercial flight, and more than 6 times what astronauts in a space shuttle experience while taking off. But that wasn’t the only remarkable thing about the incident.
Recently, an Indian Air Force pilot created history by shooting down an F-16 aircraft of the Pakistan Air Force with a MiG-21 Bison fighter jet.
